Unsettled conditions with heavy showers and strong winds are set to continue across parts of the UK into Bank Holiday Monday, following a period of heat
Thunderstorms and strong winds will continue to affect the UK into Bank Holiday Monday. This follows weeks of scorching heat and drought, with the unsettled weather bringing heavy downpours and gusty conditions for some areas.
Heavy rain and showers have already hit parts of the country this weekend. More is expected through Sunday and Monday. There will be drier, brighter spells, but the conditions could still lead to soggy moments at outdoor events and festivals.
Strong winds may also cause disruption, particularly for travellers and holidaymakers in southern parts of the UK. Some exposed coastal areas will see the gustiest conditions.
Thunderstorm warnings for Sunday
After a quiet start on Sunday, a zone of heavy and potentially thundery showers is expected to develop widely. It will sweep eastwards from the west.
The Met Office has issued yellow thunderstorm warnings across large parts of the UK for Sunday.
Looking ahead to Bank Holiday Monday, south-eastern parts could see some of the best conditions. Scattered showers in the west during the morning will gradually spread eastwards through the day. They are not expected to be as intense as those seen over the weekend.
Gusty winds to challenge southern areas
If bouts of rain were not enough, parts of southern England and Wales will continue to be buffeted by strong winds. This may make travel and camping a challenge.
Sunday will see stronger winds across southern areas of England and Wales as low pressure slowly crosses the country.
Monday will be a blustery day more widely across the UK. Again, southern areas will see the strongest gusts.
The Met Office states these gusts will generally be 30-40mph.
This will make for a cooler feeling spell of weather at times. Temperatures across the UK will be around 15 to 22 Celsius. This is a shade below the average for the time of year.
