UK autumn warmth fades with frost, wind and rain

A weather front is bringing cooler, more seasonal conditions to the UK, ending a brief spell of unseasonable warmth.

Seasons: A weather front is bringing cooler, more seasonal conditions to the UK, ending a brief spell of unseasonable warmth

A waving weather front is sweeping unseasonably warm air out of the UK, ushering in cooler, more autumnal conditions. According to the BBC, the front will deliver outbreaks of heavy and potentially thundery rain as it moves eastwards on Wednesday, with temperatures dropping into single figures overnight.

Heavy downpours usher in cooler air

The UK experienced unseasonably warm weather in recent days, with temperatures reaching around 25C in parts of England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland. This warmth is now being displaced. The advancing weather front will bring erratic outbreaks of rain across the country on Wednesday, though the south-east of England is expected to see little, if any, rainfall.

This exception allows warm air to persist in the south-east, where temperatures could again reach the mid-20s Celsius. Elsewhere, daytime highs on Wednesday will be closer to the late September average, ranging from 14C to 20C.

A cold night and morning frost

Following the rain, clearing skies and lighter winds will cause temperatures to tumble on Wednesday night. The BBC reports that most areas will see values fall back into single figures, which is typical for late September. The chill on Thursday morning may come as a shock after recent warmer nights.

In some parts of eastern Scotland, particularly around the Grampians, temperatures could dip low enough for a coating of morning frost on the grass. Sunny skies will gradually temper the chill through Thursday. While most of England and Wales will stay sunny and dry, strengthening winds will bring increasing cloud to north-western parts of the UK.

Rain is likely later in parts of western Scotland and Northern Ireland, with gales possible in coastal districts.

A brief return of warmth

After a milder start on Friday, a ridge of high pressure will allow afternoon temperatures in south-east England to climb back into the mid-20s Celsius. For the rest of the UK, temperatures will remain in the mid to high teens under large amounts of cloud, with occasional rain.

The weekend will see temperatures close to the seasonal average, feeling pleasantly warm in any sunny spells. Saturday brings the chance of further showers to many western areas. On Sunday, spells of rain will sweep across most areas at some point.

Outlook for late September

As the UK heads into the final days of September, the BBC states there are currently no signs of any significant bouts of unseasonable warmth returning. The first half of next week may still see some pleasantly warm and sunny days, but forecasts indicate a very changeable pattern overall. This pattern is expected to bring occasional rain for most, with northern and western areas potentially seeing much windier conditions at times.
